Sustainability

At Freda, sustainability is about making thoughtful decisions throughout the coffee supply chain. While there is no perfect solution in coffee, we believe in building long-term relationships, sourcing transparently, and roasting responsibly.

Sourcing Coffee Responsibly

We prioritise coffees sourced through trusted specialty importers who work directly with producers and producer groups around the world.

Many of our coffees are sourced through partners such as Falcon Specialty Coffee, whose focus on traceability and long-term relationships allows us to understand not only where our coffee comes from, but also how it was purchased and who benefits from its sale.

While certifications such as Fairtrade have played an important role within the coffee industry, we often favour coffees sourced through relationship-focused supply chains. These partnerships can provide greater transparency, clearer pricing structures, and direct feedback between producers, importers, and roasters.

For us, sustainability means knowing the story behind the coffee and supporting producers who are investing in quality, environmental stewardship, and the future of their farms.

Quality Creates Sustainability

Specialty coffee rewards quality.

By paying premiums for exceptional coffees, the specialty sector helps create opportunities for producers to invest back into their farms, their communities, and future harvests. We believe that sustainable coffee is not only about environmental impact but also about ensuring coffee farming remains economically viable for the people producing it.

Every coffee we select is chosen with this in mind.

Responsible Roasting

All Freda coffees are roasted on a Loring S35 roaster at Horsham Coffee Roaster in Sussex.

The Loring system is designed to be significantly more energy efficient than many traditional coffee roasters. Rather than continuously heating fresh air throughout the roasting process, it recirculates heat within the system, reducing overall energy consumption while maintaining exceptional roasting consistency. This approach also helps reduce emissions generated during roasting.

For a small independent roastery, access to this technology allows us to roast coffee to the highest standards while reducing the environmental impact associated with coffee roasting. The precision of the system also helps ensure each coffee expresses its unique character and flavour profile.

Always Improving

Sustainability is not a box to tick. It is an ongoing process of learning, questioning, and improving.

As Freda grows, we will continue seeking opportunities to improve our sourcing, packaging, logistics, and roasting practices while remaining transparent about the choices we make.

We believe great coffee should create value for everyone involved, from producer to customer, while respecting the resources that make it possible.
