Sustainable & Recyclable Coffee Packaging
At Freda Coffee, we're committed to roasting exceptional speciality coffee while reducing our environmental impact wherever possible. From ethically sourced single origin coffee to recyclable packaging and efficient roasting methods, we're always looking for ways to make speciality coffee more sustainable.
As a small independent speciality coffee roaster, every decision matters. We believe great coffee should not only taste incredible, but also be delivered responsibly.
Coffee Boxes
All of our coffee is shipped in cardboard boxes made from recycled materials. Once your coffee arrives, simply place the box in your household cardboard recycling collection.
By choosing recycled cardboard packaging, we're helping to reduce waste while ensuring your freshly roasted coffee arrives safely and securely.
Coffee Bags
Our coffee bags are made from kraft paper with an internal barrier designed to keep your coffee fresher for longer. They are classified as No. 7 Other recyclable packaging.
While these bags aren't currently accepted in most household recycling collections, they can be widely recycled through supermarket soft plastic recycling schemes. Many major supermarkets accept this type of packaging alongside carrier bags, bread bags and other flexible plastics.
We're also fortunate that our friends at Bond Street Coffee can recycle these bags through their commercial recycling collection, helping to keep even more packaging out of landfill.
Sustainable Coffee Roasting
Sustainability doesn't stop with our packaging.
We roast all of our speciality coffee on a highly efficient Loring S35 roaster at Horsham Coffee Roaster. Compared with traditional coffee roasters, the Loring uses significantly less energy while maintaining exceptional quality and consistency in every batch.
By roasting efficiently and only producing what we need, we're able to reduce waste while delivering freshly roasted speciality coffee directly to our customers.
Responsible Coffee Sourcing
The environmental impact of coffee starts long before it reaches the roastery.
We work with trusted speciality coffee importers who share our commitment to transparency, quality and long-term relationships with coffee producers. By sourcing exceptional coffees from dedicated farmers and cooperatives, we aim to support a more sustainable future for the coffee industry.
You can learn more about our approach to sourcing and sustainability on our Sustainability page.
Why Not Use Compostable Coffee Bags?
This is a question we're asked regularly.
While compostable coffee bags sound like the perfect solution, the reality is often more complicated. Many compostable materials require industrial composting facilities that aren't widely available across the UK. As a result, they can often end up in general waste rather than being composted correctly.
For now, we've chosen packaging that balances coffee freshness, durability and recyclability while continuing to explore new options as packaging technology develops.
Always Looking For Better
We're constantly reviewing our packaging, roasting and sourcing practices to find ways of reducing our environmental impact.
From recyclable packaging and energy-efficient roasting to responsibly sourced speciality coffee, we're committed to making thoughtful choices that benefit both our customers and the wider coffee community.
As better solutions become available, we'll continue to evolve and improve.
