Frequently Asked Questions

About Freda

What is Freda?

Freda is a small-batch specialty coffee roastery based in the UK. We carefully source and roast exceptional coffees that showcase the unique flavours of their origin. Our focus is on quality, transparency, and helping people enjoy better coffee at home.

What makes specialty coffee different?

Specialty coffee is coffee that has been grown, processed, and roasted to a higher standard than commodity coffee. It highlights the natural characteristics of the coffee bean, such as sweetness, acidity, and complexity, rather than relying on dark roasting to create flavour.

Where do you source your coffee?

We work with trusted importers and producers who prioritise quality, sustainability, and fair relationships throughout the supply chain. We look for coffees with distinctive flavour profiles and clear traceability back to their origin.

Do you roast all your coffee yourself?

Yes. Every coffee is roasted in small batches to ensure consistency, freshness, and careful quality control.

Freshness & Roasting

How fresh is the coffee when it arrives?

We roast regularly throughout the week and aim to dispatch coffee as close to roast date as possible. Every bag is clearly labelled with its roast date.

When should I drink the coffee?

For filter brewing, coffee is often at its best from around 7 to 21 days after roasting. For espresso, many coffees continue to improve for several weeks after roasting. We recommend experimenting to find the flavour you enjoy most.

How should I store my coffee?

Keep your coffee in its original sealed bag or an airtight container, away from direct sunlight, heat, and moisture. Avoid storing coffee in the fridge, as it can absorb unwanted aromas and moisture.

Should I buy whole beans or ground coffee?

For the best flavour, we recommend whole beans and grinding just before brewing. If you don't own a grinder, we can grind the coffee for your chosen brewing method.

Brewing

Which coffee is best for espresso?

Most of our coffees can be enjoyed as espresso, but some are specifically selected and roasted to perform particularly well in espresso-based drinks. Check the tasting notes and brewing recommendations on each product page.

Which coffee is best for filter brewing?

Our filter coffees are chosen to highlight clarity, sweetness, and origin character. Look for coffees recommended for V60, Chemex, AeroPress, or batch brewing.

I'm new to specialty coffee. Where should I start?

If you're new to specialty coffee, we recommend starting with a balanced and approachable coffee featuring notes of chocolate, caramel, nuts, or soft fruit. These coffees are easy to brew and offer a great introduction to specialty coffee.

Do you provide brewing advice?

Absolutely. We're always happy to help with brew recipes, grinder settings, and coffee recommendations. If you're struggling to get the most from your coffee, get in touch and we'll do our best to help.
