Freda's Story
Freda is a small-batch specialty coffee roaster based in Sussex, serving customers across the UK with carefully sourced and freshly roasted single origin coffee.
Founded in 2025, Freda was built on more than a decade of experience in specialty coffee. Coffee has been part of my life since 2009, but it was in 2011, working alongside Taras and Ame in Coffee At 33, that I was introduced to the world of specialty coffee and began to understand just how much care, precision and craftsmanship could go into every cup.
One of the moments that changed my perspective completely happened at Workshop Coffee in London. Sitting at the bar, I watched baristas prepare espresso with the attention and precision of a scientific experiment. In an era when weighing every dose and every shot was still relatively new, it was a glimpse into what coffee could become. It showed me that extraordinary coffee isn't created by chance. It's the result of countless small decisions made with care.
Roasting became a natural extension of that curiosity. I first roasted coffee professionally in 2012 at Horsham Coffee Roaster and began roasting all of my own coffee in 2017. Since then, I've continued developing Freda's roasting approach through years of production roasting, working alongside trusted partners including Phramacie Coffee and Horsham Coffee Roaster.
Today, Freda focuses exclusively on single origin coffee. Rather than offering large ranges or year-round blends, I prefer to source smaller lots and roast seasonally, allowing customers to experience coffees at their freshest and most expressive. Every coffee is chosen because it has a distinct story to tell, and my role as a roaster is simply to help that story come through in the cup.
My roasting philosophy is built around balance. I aim to highlight the work already done by producers rather than impose heavy roast character onto the coffee. By avoiding unwanted roasting flavours and focusing on clarity, sweetness and structure, the goal is to showcase the coffee exactly as the farmer intended.
The coffees I love most are clean and elegant, with crisp acidity, balance and a tea-like clarity. Whether brewed as espresso or filter coffee, I want every cup to feel approachable, refined and enjoyable from the first sip to the last.
Freda sources specialty coffee through a network of trusted UK importers, with Falcon Specialty in Lewes playing an important role in helping me access exceptional coffees from around the world. While the business is currently too small to buy directly from producers, transparency and traceability remain central to every purchasing decision. I work hard to understand where every coffee comes from and how it was produced.
Although I enjoy coffees from every coffee-growing region, you'll often find exceptional lots from Guatemala, Brazil, Peru and Kenya featured throughout the year. Seasonal availability shapes the range, ensuring that every coffee is selected at its peak.
Alongside Freda, I've spent many years running cafés across Sussex, including Bond Street Coffee, Brewed Coffee, Black Rain and several independent coffee projects. Those experiences taught me what coffee drinkers actually want at home: consistency, freshness and coffee that tastes as good as it smells.
Today, Freda exists to serve home brewers, coffee enthusiasts and wholesale partners looking for thoughtfully sourced specialty coffee beans. Whether you're searching for espresso coffee beans, filter coffee beans or a flexible coffee subscription, every coffee is roasted in small batches with attention to detail and a commitment to quality.
The name Freda comes from my Nanny, whose encouragement and support helped shape the person I became. Naming the roastery after her felt like the perfect way to honour someone who always believed in me.
As Freda grows, the goal is simple: continue sourcing exceptional single origin coffee, build a community of subscribers and home brewers, and create a roastery that can travel with our family wherever life takes us next.
Thank you for being part of the journey.
